Our Story
YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.
The first line in the ledger records a reversal. In 2008, Melissa Ben-Ishay was dismissed from her assistant media planner role. The next line records her brother's encouragement to go home, bake cupcakes, and start a business. Melissa Ben-Ishay later stood as a founder of Baked by Melissa.
What entered the first product ledger
The early product ledger records miniature, bite-size cupcakes and ideas based on tie-dye, cookie dough, peanut butter cup, and s’mores. The place column begins with New York City; the retail column begins with Baked by Melissa's pickup window in SoHo.
Credits owed to a city and a community
Two credits stand out. The female-founded business credits New York City with influencing early creativity and energy. It also credits family, friends, and team through the group vision at the center of Baked by Melissa's account.
MAKE LIFE SWEETER.
The final balance recognizes Melissa Ben-Ishay as a founder and recognizes the group vision around Baked by Melissa. Relatives, friends, and teammates share the closing credit for helping the idea continue.
